Decked-out

According to the Home Improvement Research Institute, deck, patio and porch renovations and additions have increased nearly 7.5 percent since quarter three of last year. In addition, it was also reported that 70 percent of homeowners surveyed are actively planning at least one or more improvement project over the next three months. As backyard installations are becoming more popular, so too is the need for outdoor kitchens that can be implemented in a variety of settings, including decks.

James Moylan, president of Design Builders, Inc., a Washington D.C.-based company that specializes in creating high-end screen porches, decks, patios, and outdoor kitchens, recently completed such an installation. “My clients wanted a screened-in porch with a Cape Cod-style outdoor kitchen; yet a traditional masonry stone design would have been too heavy for the raised deck,” explained James. “I knew the solution was Danver Stainless Outdoor Kitchens’ stainless steel cabinetry.

James’ client specifically requested a contemporary design with clean, simple lines that matched the rest of the home’s classical beach theme. “We built the deck first, laying down gray-toned boards; naturally the colors of the kitchen needed to complement the rest of the design,” said James. Together he and his clients decided Danver’s Key West door style with a metallic bronze matte powder coat finish would blend seamlessly.

To balance the look and feel of the cabinetry, James selected the Strato countertop from Dekton by Cosentino. The Dekton outdoor countertop is made from a sophisticated blend of glass, porcelain and quartz and offers UV resistance for color stability outdoors as well as exceptional strength and high resistance to impacts, scratches and abrasion for use in high-traffic areas. It is also non-porous; thus, accidental spills will not stain the surface.

What is more, the outdoor kitchen was adorned with a Big Green Egg smoker as well as a Summit refrigerator and a Blaze grill and cooktop. “My clients are avid home cooks, so it was necessary for the design to incorporate high-tech appliances to meet their specific needs,” he said.

As an added bonus, Moylan and his team offer all customers a live video stream of the installation, so his clients can monitor the progress at any time of the day, on any device. “This enables our clients to provide feedback at every stage of the installation, ensuring they are satisfied with the outcome,” explained James. “We’re pleased this particular installation has already been maximized to its fullest potential.”
